Giving / Carnegie Mellon's West Coast Campus

Rare it is that a university emerges from a Silicon Valley garage and declares "Eureka!" Now, after years of planning from our perch in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, we'd like to introduce our newest Silicon Valley invention: Carnegie Mellon's West Coast Campus.

Carnegie Mellon's West Coast Campus is a branch campus of our university located in the NASA Research Park at Moffett Field, California. Its purpose is to bring our distinctive expertise in Software Engineering, eCommerce, Robotics, and other interdisciplinary fields to complement the Silicon Valley educational community. At the same time, it gives us an opportunity to interact more closely with our 3000+ alumni in the Bay Area and offer students at the Pittsburgh campus the opportunity for internships and research programs with Silicon Valley companies. I'd like to invite you to become a founder of Carnegie Mellon's West Coast Campus.

Our branch campus at Moffett Field has the potential to host over a hundred faculty members and thousands of scientists and engineers with the latest technical expertise and know-how in a variety of cutting-edge fields. Carnegie Mellon's West Coast Campus is a bold venture, and we are seeking donors who understand the importance of continued aggressive advancement of US scientific and engineering capabilities.

Carnegie Mellon

Carnegie Mellon is a unique institution. As early as the 1950's, its leaders began to position the university around computer technology as an intellectual force. This was a prescient decision. The faculty of our university created the new fields of computer science, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, robotics, and software engineering. We infused universities nationwide with an appreciation for the significance of computing technology. Today, we continue to create new paradigms in areas including human-computer interaction, data mining, language processing, and entertainment technology. We combine a unique blend of cutting-edge science and real-world pragmatism. The same potent cocktail that is embedded in the history and verve of Silicon Valley. Carnegie Mellon has helped to supply the technical inspiration and people for many of the computer industry's successes: Accel Partners, Adobe, Apple, Blue Martini, Cadence, Cisco, HP, IBM, Juniper Networks, IDEO, Inktomi, Microsoft, Mobius Venture Capital, Rational, SUN, Xerox and many others.

Carnegie Mellon's West Coast Campus

We are building our branch campus at Moffett Field to continue the tradition of advancing excellence in US science and engineering. In addition to regular teaching and research, campus initiatives will include:

· RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS. Many Carnegie Mellon professors organize targeted research projects that help existing companies or create new ones. For example, data storage system research at the Pittsburgh campus has given rise to an IBM lab, a Seagate research center, an Intel research center, and companies like Panassas and Spinnaker Networks. We have already begun collaborations on projects with Silicon Valley companies.
· INDUSTRY CONSORTIA. Carnegie Mellon is organizing a Sustainable Computing Consortium that will drive improvements in software quality and security among major corporations, software developers and IT suppliers, university researchers, government agencies, and third parties involved in aspects of risk management such as audit and insurance. Drawing upon the expertise of its members and researchers, it will integrate the various facets of sustainability to guide executive decision-making.
· UNIQUE PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS. Carnegie Mellon creates courses of study in computer-related subjects far in advance of other institutions. We were the first to begin programs in Software Engineering, eCommerce, Computer Security, and Entertainment Technology.
· STUDENT INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS. Students from Carnegie Mellon's Pittsburgh campus will spend time at Carnegie Mellon's West Coast Campus pursuing internships and work-study programs with local companies.

I believe Carnegie Mellon will flourish in Silicon Valley and bring added value to a very important scientific and educational region for information technology. By becoming a financial supporter of Carnegie Mellon's West Coast Campus, you will serve as co-founder of an exciting new institution. Our mission is clear. The blueprints have been drafted. With your assistance, we look forward to transforming our humble Moffett Field garage into a major Silicon Valley enterprise.
